Extension activities during past five years

  • Conducted a ‘Farmers’ mela’ on 17th April 2015 at Sivagiri, Erode district for 50 farmers from three districts viz., Erode, Dindigul and Nagapatinam cultivating Pomegranate, Guava, Paddy and Turmeric. RKN, Meloidogyne incognita infestation on pomegranate was first observed during the orchard visit.
  • A Field day was conducted at Sundakamuthur, Perur taluk, Coimbatore on 19th May 2015 on ‘Nematode management in turmeric’, for the benefit of turmeric growers in that area.
  • A ‘Nematode Awareness Campaign’ was organized by the Department of Nematology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Nematodes in Cropping Systems, ICAR, New Delhi on 28th March 2016 at Ayakudi, Dindigul district for the Guava growers.
  • A TV newsflash was given in DD PODIGAI channel in Tamil by Dr.K.Poornima, Professor on ‘Root knot nematode problem in guava in Tamil Nadu’. It was telecast on April 2nd 2016 and retelecast on 4th April 2016 in PODIGAI channel.
  • A trilingual video documentary on ‘Management of root knot nematode in guava and pomegranate’ was launched on 5th July 2016 during the Scientific Workers Conference held at TNAU.
  • On 18th July 2016, a Scientists’ Farmers’ interactive meet was organized at Ayakudi during which several guava orchards declining due to root knot nematode fungal disease complex were visited by the team consisting of the Project coordinator, Dr.R.K.Walia, Dr.K.Poornima, scheme incharge, Plant protection scientists and Dean, Dr.T.N.Balamohan of Horticultural college and Research Institute, Periyakulam.
  • Training was given to the Horticultural Officers of 10 districts of Tamil Nadu on ‘Management of nematodes in fruits, vegetables and flower crops’ on 29.1.2016 at e- extension center of TNAU, Coimbatore. The training was conducted by SAMETI in colloboration with Directorate of Extension Education (DoEE) under the heading ‘IPM strategies on Fruits, Vegetables and Flower crops’.
  • Training was given to the ADHs, DDHs and Horticultural Officers of 10 districts of Tamil Nadu on ‘Management of nematodes in fruits, vegetables and flower crops’ on 17.2.2016 at e- extension center of TNAU, Coimbatore. The training was conducted by SAMETI in colloboration with Directorate of Extension Education (DoEE) under the heading ‘IPM strategies on Fruits, Vegetables and Flower crops’
  • Training was imparted to 15 farmers from Nilgiris growing hill vegetables under the ATMA programme, brought by State dept of Horticulture and ICAR, KVK, Coimbatore jointly on 17.2.2016.
  • Three hundred and fifty farmers (each in batches of 100 numbers) from Periyakulam district growing all types of vegetables and fruit crops, were brought to TNAU for training on plant protection under NHM with special emphasis on nematodes (practicals session was arranged for nematology alone) on February 29th, March 1st and 3rd 2016.
  • Abandoned polyhouses at Pasur and Bhavani of Erode district were visited by AICRP team (Dr.N.Swarnakumari and Dr.P.Kalairasan) in July 2016 and it was observed that lack of foggers and fans had abnormally increased the temperature inside the polyhouses, which could be one of the reasons for increase in nematode multiplication.
  • A ‘Field day’ on ‘Nematode management on tuberose’ was conducted on 24th October 2016 at Sathyamangalam, Erode district under the AICRP (Nematodes) in which the Project Coordinator, Dr.R.K.Walia participated.
  • A ‘KISAN MELA’ was conducted at Navakarai for pandal vegetable growers on 20th March 2017 in which the Project Coordinator, Dr.R.K.Walia participated.
  • Survey of fruit nurseries and polyhouses were conducted by Dr.K.Poornima, AICRP scheme incharge along with other team members for nematode infestation in Andhra and Telangana from 13th to 16th April 2017.
